Westlake Village, CA Jan. 2011. Antidepressants are one of the most generally prescribed types of prescription drugs. Chief among these are the class of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, generally referred to as SSRIs. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter, a chemical located in the central nervous system that contributes to the overall sense of well-being. Antidepressant medications are created in line with the theory that lower levels of serotonin within the brain result in depressive symptoms. Inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin means that the neurons do not reabsorb the chemical as quickly, meaning that the receptor cells are stimulated multiple times with the same chemical. With the additional amount of serotonin in the synapses (the spaces between the cells), the rest of the brain’s signals are enhanced which, in turn, elevates the mood. Unfortunately, many of these medications include side effects that may cause many unwanted symptoms; leaving patients seeking a more natural approach to anti-depressant withdrawal.
